Leads and Opportunities are private by default in Lux
A new lead or opportunity is visible to no one but its owner. Access is something you grant on purpose: by ownership, by a field value, or to a whole team.

Closed until you open it
Every lead and every opportunity starts private. Across the org, no one sees a record they do not own. That is the org-wide default, and it does not change on its own. If a team should see a set of leads, you open that access deliberately.

Opening access
Three ways to grant it
Access on a private object is never accidental. It comes from one of these, and you can combine them.
By ownership
The owner of a record always sees it. Assign a lead to someone and it is theirs.
By a field value
A sharing rule can open records that match a value. For example, share every lead whose Source is a given unit with that unit's team. The rule follows the data, so new matching leads are shared automatically.
To a team or group
A sharing rule can open a set of records to a whole group at once, such as the full partnerships team, or one school's staff.

Who can see a lead
By default, no one
A lead or opportunity is private until access is granted. Nobody sees it org-wide.
With a grant
The owner, admins, and everyone a sharing rule reaches. Change the rule and you change who sees the records.
Everyone else sees nothing. A private lead is not greyed out or marked hidden for them. It simply is not returned.
Why you can trust it
Enforced in the database, not on the page
Private by default is enforced at the data layer. A record the viewer has no grant for is never returned. Not in a list, a report, an export, or an integration. Access is exactly the owner, the admins, and the grants you set.
